What deposit do I need to buy a property?

For most owner-occupied homes in New Zealand, banks generally look for a 20% deposit. However, you may be able to purchase with a smaller deposit depending on your circumstances, the property and your lender.
- First-home buyers: Some banks offer low-deposit lending from around 10%, subject to their lending criteria and availability. Eligible buyers may also qualify for a Kāinga Ora First Home Loan with as little as 5% deposit.
- New-build properties: Deposit requirements can sometimes be more flexible when purchasing a qualifying new build or recently completed property.

Buying a Williams Corporation property? Through Own With Williams, eligible buyers may be able to purchase with just a 5% deposit. Williams Corporation contributes additional funds towards the purchase in return for owning a proportion of the property under its shared-ownership arrangement. T&Cs apply.
